CBP One App Shutdown: What Happened to Parole Holders

January 23, 20256 min read

What Changed

The CBP One app was shut down on January 20, 2025, and approximately 30,000 existing appointments were cancelled. The CHNV parole program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans was also terminated.

Who Is Affected

Approximately 1 million people who had entered through CBP One, plus those with pending appointments.

Attorney Required

Anyone who entered through CBP One or the CHNV parole program should consult an immigration attorney immediately about their status and options.

What Happened

On January 20, 2025, the Trump administration:

  • Shut down the CBP One app's core functions
  • Cancelled approximately 30,000 existing appointments
  • Terminated the CHNV parole program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans

The app had previously allowed migrants to schedule appointments at southwest border ports of entry to seek asylum eligibility, with approximately 1 million people having used it to enter the country.

April 2025 Parole Termination Notices

On April 11, 2025, DHS sent parole termination notices to approximately 900,000 to 985,000 individuals who had been paroled into the country through CBP One appointments.

These notices required individuals without other immigration status to:

  • Depart the United States within seven days
  • Or face removal proceedings

Important Protections That May Apply

Many CBP One beneficiaries have obtained other protections:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

  • Individuals with TPS are protected from deportation
  • TPS provides work authorization
  • Check if your country has current TPS designation

Pending Asylum Cases

  • Those with pending asylum applications generally may remain
  • Immigration court proceedings provide certain protections
  • Active cases should continue through the court system

What You Should Do

  1. Consult an immigration attorney immediately
  2. Gather all immigration documents
  3. Document your entry and any status changes
  4. Do not make departure decisions without legal advice
  5. Check if you qualify for other protections

CBP Home App

In March 2025, CBP One was replaced with a new app called "CBP Home" which:

  • Retained some functions from the original app
  • Allows individuals to report intent to depart
  • Serves different purposes than the original app

Consultant Limitations

This situation is extremely complex. Consultants:

  • CANNOT advise on individual status
  • CANNOT determine if someone should depart
  • CANNOT assess eligibility for other protections
  • MUST refer all CBP One/parole questions to attorneys

Critical Warning

Do NOT make decisions about departure without consulting an immigration attorney. Individual circumstances vary significantly, and the consequences of wrong decisions can be severe.
